History

Count Jørgen Christensen of Scheel had the 12th century Essenbæk Church demolished due to dilapidation in 1865 and commissioned the architect Frits Uldall to have a new one built some 600 m to the south in Assentoft. It was the first church that Uldall had designed and was built 1868-69 in the Romanesque style with red bricks on a base of granite ashlars from the original Essenbæk Church. The painter Anton Laurids Johannes Dorph produced an altarpiece for the church, and on May 9, 1869 the altar was consecrated by Bishop Gerhard Peter Brammer of Århus.

In 1967-68 the painter Mogens Henri Jørgensen painted the ceiling of the nave and in 1985-86 produced glass mosaics for the nave and choir, a stained-glass picture for the apse and a new altarpiece.
